CHAPTER 14

Vivian woke up feeling groggy and disoriented. Thoughts of the last few days’ events seeped back into her mind. She couldn’t afford to wallow, and she knew it. She thought about Peggy’s offer and groaned but figured the quick trip to the woods with her old friend might shake her out of the daze she was in. She hauled herself out of bed, threw on her newly acquired t-shirt and shorts, unlatched the locks on her door, and peered out to make sure Ben wasn’t around. She was relieved not to see any sign of him and slipped into the bathroom to shower and brush her teeth.

When she came out, she found a plate of fried eggs and potatoes waiting for her, along with a cup of coffee and a note:

Vivian-

Heard you were up and about—knew you wouldn’t want me hanging around out there, but figured you might want some breakfast. Sorry, didn’t know how you like your coffee. Hope you got some good rest.
